About Nalati Scenic Tourism Area

One of the great alpine grasslands of Central Asia, spread across the Tianshan foothills in Ili, Xinjiang. Herds of horses and sheep graze beside Kazakh yurts, with wildflowers, forested valleys, and snow mountains stretching to the horizon.

Highlights

• One of the world's four great grasslands: the 'Sky Grassland' sub-alpine meadow. • Kazakh yurts, wildflowers (Jun-Sep) and snow mountains.

Suggested Route

Enter at the gate, take the shuttle to the Sky Grassland, then the Valley Grassland and forest park; allow 4-6 h or overnight.

Stay in yurts or Nalati town hotels; try Kazakh milk tea, hand-grabbed mutton and naan.

Travel Tips

1) Day-night temperature swings at Nalati are large—check the forecast before setting out and dress accordingly. 2) The scenic area is high-altitude; in summer bring long sleeves, sun protection, an umbrella, and drink plenty of water; in spring/autumn bring a sweater or jacket and an umbrella. 3) Nalati is a Kazakh area practicing Islam—do not mention pork at mealtime. When buying things or joining activities, confirm the item and price before paying. 4) Do not scold or hit herders' livestock or dogs. 5) Xinjiang is 2 hours behind Beijing time; mornings generally start around 0...
