Why Take China's High Speed Train?

Faster than flying for trips under 1,000km when you count airport time
City center to city center - stations are downtown, not 1 hour away
More reliable - 98% on-time rate vs flight delays
Comfortable - spacious seats, power outlets, smooth ride
Scenic views - see countryside you'd miss from 30,000 feet
Eco-friendly - much lower carbon than flying

Train Types: G vs D vs C

G-Trains (高铁)

The fastest trains in China. Connect major cities like Beijing-Shanghai in 4.5 hours. Most comfortable and reliable.

Best for: Long distances, business travel, comfort priority

D-Trains (动车)

200-250 km/h

Slightly slower but more routes available. Often cheaper than G-trains. Good for medium distances.

At the Station: Step by Step

1

Arrive Early

Arrive 30-45 minutes before departure. Major stations (Beijing South, Shanghai Hongqiao) are huge - allow extra time to find your platform.

2

Security Check

All luggage goes through X-ray. Remove power banks from bags for inspection. Liquids may be tested. Keep passport handy.

3

Find Your Platform

Check the large departure boards. Look for your train number and platform (站台). Gates open 10-15 minutes before departure.

4

Boarding

Use the manual/passport lane (人工通道) - not the QR code gates. Show your passport to staff. They'll verify your booking and let you through.

5

Find Your Seat

Car numbers are marked on the platform. Seats are numbered. Store large luggage in overhead racks or at the end of the car.

🍱 Food on Board

Dining car has hot meals (¥30-60). Food cart comes through with snacks. Better: Buy food at station before boarding - more variety, better prices.

Smoking is strictly prohibited on all trains and platforms. Violators face fines and potential arrest.
