China Toilet Survival Guide

The guide no one wants to need but everyone should read. Squat toilets, no toilet paper, and how to stay clean and comfortable in China.

🚽 The Reality Check

  • Public toilets do NOT have toilet paper - ever
  • Squat toilets are standard in public facilities
  • Soap is rare - bring hand sanitizer
  • It's not as bad as it sounds - just be prepared

What to Pack (Non-Negotiable)

Pocket Tissues

Public toilets never provide toilet paper

Wet Wipes

For hands and... other needs. More versatile than toilet paper

Hand Sanitizer

Soap often unavailable

Small Trash Bag

For used tissues when no trash can

Portable Toilet Seat Covers

For Western toilets in questionable places

Pro tip: Put a pack of tissues in every bag, pocket, and jacket. You will need them when you least expect it.

What to Expect By Location

Public Toilets at Attractions

Squat toilets, no toilet paper, sometimes no doors

Strategy: Bring tissues, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer. Wear shoes you can easily remove if needed.

Train Stations

Crowded, basic facilities, often squat style

Strategy: Go before arriving at station. Allow extra time. Carry your own supplies.

Malls & Hotels

Western toilets usually available, cleaner

Strategy: Best option when available. Department store bathrooms are generally decent.

Restaurants

Variable quality, may be squat or Western

Strategy: Higher-end restaurants have better facilities. Street food places may have no bathroom.

Highways / Rest Stops

Often the worst - dirty, no supplies

Strategy: Use before long drives. Bring extra supplies. Some tour buses have toilets.

How to Use a Squat Toilet

It's actually more hygienic (no contact) once you get used to it:

  1. 1Face the hood/ceramic wall (not the door)
  2. 2Pants down to knees, hold them up to avoid floor contact
  3. 3Squat low - the lower you go, the easier
  4. 4Flush by stepping on pedal or pouring water
  5. 5No toilet paper? Use water bucket and left hand (bring wipes instead!)

Practice at home: If you've never used one, practice squatting low before your trip. Your thighs will thank you.

Where to Find Better Bathrooms

Malls (especially high-end like IAPM, Parc 66)
Starbucks / McDonald's / KFC
Hotel lobbies (walk in confidently)
Department stores
Modern office buildings
Avoid: Street-level public toilets, highway rest stops

Emergency Situations

No Toilet Paper + No Tissues

Use water bucket (if available) and air dry. Or sacrifice a sock/underwear. This is why you ALWAYS carry tissues.

Can't Squat (Injury/Disability)

Look for disabled/family toilet (残疾人厕所). Ask staff for "Western toilet" (西式厕所). Malls and hotels are your best bet.

Urgent Need in Tourist Area

Find nearest hotel lobby, Starbucks, or McDonald's. Walk in confidently - no one will stop you.

The Silver Lining

  • Squat toilets are more hygienic - no skin contact with surfaces
  • You'll appreciate Western toilets more when you find them
  • Great travel story - everyone loves a good toilet tale
  • Builds character - you can handle anything after this
