About Suoyang City Ruins

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the ancient Silk Roads, this ruined Tang-dynasty garrison city near Guazhou, Gansu, retains rammed-earth walls, an ancient canal system and Buddhist temple remains. Boardwalks guide visitors across the windswept desert ruins.

Highlights

• UNESCO World Heritage Site (Silk Roads, 2014) and one of China's best-preserved Tang-era military defense cities. • Walk the inner and outer rammed-earth walls and the ancient canal irrigation system. • Adjacent Ta'er Temple Buddhist ruins and 2,000+ tombs.

Suggested Route

Enter at the visitor center, then walk the outer/inner city walls and Ta'er Temple; allow 2-3 h. A site shuttle covers the spread-out ruins .

Food & Lodging

Eat and stay in Guazhou County town (about 60 km away) - try local melons and noodle dishes. On-site lodging is limited.

Facilities

Parking, visitor center, restrooms and wooden boardwalks around the walls. Signage is mostly Chinese with limited English interpretation.

Check for special exhibitions or cultural performances. Some areas may require additional tickets.
