About Kanas Tourism Area

A glacial lake in the Altai Mountains of northern Xinjiang, ringed by dense taiga forest and snow-capped peaks. Home to the Tuva villages of Hemu and Baihaba, it is famed for its emerald-green waters and brilliant autumn colors.

Suggested Route

Enter at Jiadenyu, take the shuttle to Kanas Lake, walk the lakeside boardwalk to Guanyu Pavilion and visit a Tuva village; allow a full day (overnight advised).

Stay in wooden lodges or Tuva homestays inside; try roasted whole lamb, milk tea and naan.

Travel Tips

1) Kanas lies at the foot of snow mountains—temperatures are low year-round with large day-night swings; bring plenty of warm clothing. 2) There are no ATMs in the scenic area; carry enough cash. 3) Mobile signal is poor; plan accordingly. 4) Food inside is very expensive—stock up in Urumqi or Burqin, bringing high-calorie items like chocolate and energy drinks. UV is strong and the climate is dry, so bring plenty of sunscreen and moisturizer. 5) Xinjiang is home to many ethnic minorities—respect religious customs.
